Kapelle-Berschis

The ancient little St. George's Chapel, known as "Sant Jöri" in local dialect, sits on the northwest lying St. Georgesberg at Berschis, which at its highest point is about 150 m above the valley floor. It is probably on the site of an early Middle Ages church. Archeological finds indicate an earlier Roman defence construction. From this beautiful viewing point over Sarganserland it is easy to see the strategic importance of these cliffs. "Saint Jöri" is the oldest church in Sarganserland and most unusually has two naves.
