The ruins are often visited by schools, hiker, families and individuals. The Rotary Club have created a barbecue and picnic area at this beautiful location complete with stunning views.
Castle Waternstein was built in 1206 under the direction of Abbot Konrad von Zweifalten as a staging post and fortress for Pfäfers Abbey.
The castle had an interesting history but was abandoned in 1586 from when it began to fall into ruin.
When the abbey was rebuilt following a fire in 1665, Abbot Bonifaz Tschupp allowed building material (stones) from Castle Wartenstein to be used, casing further decay.
Take the bus from Bad Ragaz to Wartenstein. Directly above Hotel Wartenstein a signpost shows the way through the woods.
